Maths Ideas

  • “Hit the Button” app for tablet – great for practising tables
  • Play Board Games that have mathematical thinking e.g. Connect 4, Snakes and Ladders, Bingo, Frustration, Number Rumba, Scrabble, Monopoly….
  • A deck of cards will provide hours of fun and learning (oral language, maths, turn-taking) – play card games such as Go Fish, Rummy, Old Maid, Beggar My Neighbour, Snap…..
  • Make your own clock and practise telling the time. For older children, make a digital clock too. Look at a TV timetable and place the hands of the clock to show when your favourite programme starts/ends. Work out how long the programme lasts.
  • Help your child to set up a little tuck-shop at home; make labels and price each item.Give your child coins and they can “buy” their snacks each day!
  • Use food to teach fractions – e.g. a bar of Dairy Milk has eight pieces (each piece is one eighth), and half of the bar is four eighths, so one quarter is two eighths etc.
  • Bake with your child – look up the recipe, weigh out the ingredients (grammes and millilitres), watch the clock during the cooking time. Afterwards, child could write/type up the ingredients and steps followed (Procedural Writing) and create a personal recipe book.
  • Lightbot: Code Hour is a great free app that introduces children to coding with puzzles – it secretly teaches programming logic as you play!
  • Use Lego to make patterns – patterns of colours, blocks etc.
