  WOOF 2011/12

Walk Out On Friday.

Every Friday, our Green School Committee checks each class to see what percentage of children walked, cycled, parked and strode or carpooled. The class that has the smallest percentage of children that travelled by car for the whole month wins WOOF (our mascot!) and the class get to keep him in their room for the whole month. Each child has a turn to take WOOF home with them for the night.

GREEN FLAG 2010

~ Report by Niamh

Success  for  St Peter’s strikes again! After  all our hard work,  we were successful in getting our fifth Green Flag.  This year the flag was for energy emissions.  To win this we had people from 2nd class go around at lunchtime to check and make sure that all switches were off.  We have C.O.W days and W.O.O.F days which stand for Cycle On Wednesday and Walk  Out On Friday. This stops us from using cars!   The Green Schools Committee go around all the classes and see who   cycles, walks, parks and strides or carpools.  Then they would add the totals and see which class won.  Then they calculate the percentages for the month and the class that won get off homework and get either Woff the dog or the Golden Boot.  The Green Schools Committee did this hard work , which included, from 6th Class, Declan and Niamh, from 5th Class, Chloe and Martin, and from 4th Class, Donal and Callie.  Mr Mulligan picked two names out of a hat to go to Dublin to collect the prize.  Only two could go and Callie and Donal were picked.  When they came back with the Green Flag, Declan was proud to hold it on his Confirmation Day for the entrance procession.

Special thanks to Ms. Susan Doorley who was the Trasport Co-Ordinator from An Taisce.

WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

To end our walk to school week this year we had a fancy dress day on Friday.

We also had a "bling your bike" competition.

Finally, we also had a "bling your helmet" competition.

Our Green School Committee created a fabulous video to showcase our school grounds and the work our committee and school have been doing to help the environment. Click the image below to view the video on YouTube.

BLESSING OF THE SEEDS 2010

Fr Mc Enroe visited the school to bless the seeds we planted this month. Each class is growing a different plant/flower in order to make our school grounds look beautiful. Each child in every class plants a seed.

LUNCHBOX SURVEY RESULTS

It was great to see that all classes are using reusable lunchboxes and there has been a huge improvement on reusing plastic bottles. Our next target is to reduce the amount of cling film we use.

Cycle Training

On the 11th and 12th of  November,  Ms.Farrell’s 4th and 5th Classes  and Ms. Keane    O’ Hagans  5th     class completed  a  Cycle Training course with  a  training  group  called Pedal Right.  Mary and Maria were the names of  the trainers. We were split into two groups - Ms. Farrell’s fifth in the morning , then Ms. Farrell’s fourth and Ms. Keane  O ‘Hagan’s fifth in the afternoon .

First we were taught how to position our helmets correctly on our heads. Mary and Maria told us some fierce stories about people getting killed when not wearing their helmets!  Then we were shown  how  to  do a  bike check. It is also called an M check. You start at the wheel, then to the saddle, then back down to chain, back up to handlebars and then back  down to the front wheel. If  any of our bikes had a problem Mary or Maria could fix it in a flash. When all that was done we went on to some exercises.

Our very first exercise was trying to brake at the right time. Everyone completed this successfully . Then we moved on to a different exercise. We had to swerve in and out of cones and try to not to  knock  them  over . This would test our balance. Our last exercise for that day was the slow bicycle race which would test our balance and our control over our bike.

On our second day it sadly rained but we carried on regardless of the weather. In the morning we had our M test which would see if we could remember how to check our bikes correctly. Then we moved on to learning hand signals for our next exercise.  We  had to cycle about five metres and do a left or right or slowing down signal. Then we had one final slow bicycle race. And finally we cycled around the whole school.

Then we put our bikes away and thanked Mary and Maria for teaching us the right way to cycle. We hope we can do Level  Two next year.

Environmental Awards: June 2009

We were in the top 5 in the county and retained our Platinum award, scoring 96 marks out of 100. A big thank you to all the pupils, teachers and parents who helped out! Meadbh was very highly commended as a Young Environmentalist 2008/09.

Gardening 2009

Mr. Hamilton has been very kind, giving 4th, 5th and 6th classes the option to read-or-weed! Obviously most people chose the option to weed and the car park flower beds have never looked better! The green schools judges thought so too!

Sixth Class Green Schools Poems

This year the green school’s committee have been very busy organizing WOOF days. This stands for Walk Out on Friday. Every woof day over one hundred pupils walk to school. We also have poster, story and poem competitions, which have proved a great success. With the help of Susan Doorley, an An Taisce representative, we have created a trend and now a lot more children are walking to school. In preparation for COW day, or Cycle on Wednesday, Sixth class made posters or wrote stories or poems. Some of the winners were Kate, Meabh and Shane.

The Green Tree

When children walk or cycle to school on a Woof Day they get to put a green leaf on our Green Tree in the main school foyer (a big thank you to Ms Farrell's 5th class for painting the fabulous tree). Here is a photograph of Our Green Tree with all the leaves attached and some children from Ms. O'Rourke's First Class.
