French

Bonjour à tous!

In September 2007, St. Peter’s N.S. joined the Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative, which aims to introduce modern languages (French, German, Spanish and Italian) at primary school level.  5th and 6th Classes in our school are now learning French.  Topics covered include greetings, colours, numbers, names of days and months, weather, pastimes, family, food, etc.  Aspects of French culture are introduced, and games, songs and art make learning fun.  Our French teacher is Ms. Farrell, and our Project Leader is Mme. Frédérique Rantz. Look out for examples of the children’s work which are displayed on the French notice board in our school hall.

Though only beginning their studies in September 2007, Ms Farrell and the pupils of 5th and 6th classes have been rewarded for all their hard work and enthusiasm. The school will be featured on the modern language initiative website (www.mlpsi.ie) soon. Congratulations to Ms. Farrell and the children involved!

French class

We have been very lucky throughout the last two years to have had Mrs. Farrell teaching us French. We have achieved a great level of French and have a wonderful advantage heading into secondary school. Mrs. Farrell presented us with our French certificates of participation.  Merci Beaucoup Mrs. Farrell !!

OUR FRENCH VISITOR

On the second of June we had a very special visitor to our class. Her name was Madame Frederique. When she first arrived she asked us what we had done in French. She revised some of it with us and after a while we realised that she was very friendly. After the work she did with us in our classroom, she took us outside to play some French games. The first one was called “Le Beret”. It involved two teams and every member of each team got a number in French. Madame Frederique then called out a number and the two people (who were on opposite teams) who had that number ran out and had to reach a bandana. When they reached the bandana they had to circle it three times with one of their hands behind their backs. After circling it three times they had to try and grab it before their opposition did. After grabbing it they had to run back to their team. However, their opposition could stop them by tipping the bandana!

The next game we played was called “Le facteur”. At the start we all sat in a circle. One child was chosen to be le facteur, which means the postman. The postman walked round the outside of the circle while we sang the days of the week in French. The postman tipped one of the other children who then chased him around the circle. This game was the French equivalent of Duck, Duck, Goose.

Our last game was 1,2,3,Soleil! One child, who was on, faced the wall and called out “un, deux, trois, soleil!” The other children had to run and try to reasch the wall before being caught. This game was like “1,2,3, Red Lights”. We all enjoyed Madame Frederique’s visit and we hope to meet her again next year when we’re in Sixth Class.

2007 - 2008

On the 11th of June our school had a French day. A French girl named Laetitia, who is living in Ireland, came into the school and told us all about France. She talked to us about her home, her family, French food, her work and schools in France.

Then we tasted French food like croissants, crepes, paté and  brioche. The room was decorated with projects 5th and 6th  class had made on anything to do with France: Coco Chanel, Lyon F.C., Eurodisney, The Louvre, French cars etc. Junior Infants made French flags, Senior Infants made the Eiffel Tower and 4th class did fact files on French speaking countries, so the room was well decorated. 6th Class had been teaching 3 French songs to all the pupils of the school, so we all sang them for Laetitia. French day was a big success!

The song you hear when you click onto our French page is "Sur le pont d'Avignon". The song is played on the recorder by the children who are learning French.
