SCHOOL TOUR 2009

Causey Farm

Our tour this year was the best one yet! We got to go to a bog and go swimming in the mud, feed animals and pet them, blow giant bubbles, make things out of clay, go on a treasure hunt and ride on the tractor. There were so many things to do that we had to make a separate page for all the photos!! You can find them HERE.

Maths - Measurement

We were learning about how to measure length. Before using metres, we learned about measuring using spans and strides. We measured the classroom and we travelled outside to measure the width and length of the yard. We made estimations of the width and length before we measured in pairs and on our own. We discovered that strides and spans were not always an accurate way to measure because we all have different sized spans and strides!! Our teacher used only half the number of strides that we did because she could stretch further!

Speech and Drama

We performed our poems for Ms. Boyle today and we all did extremely well. We all got medals and certificates.

Material Hunt

We took advantage of the sunny weather to go on a material hunt around the school. We tried to find examples of materials that were smooth, hard, soft, transparent and shiny. When we looked close enough around the school we found lots of examples! We also looked for examples of types of materials - plastic, wood, metal and paper. When we looked at the teachers' cars in the carpark we could find an example of each type of material [plastic window wipers, wooden box sitting on the back seat, metal all around the car and a paper pay parking ticket stuck to our teacher's window!]

Writing Workshop Page

We have been busy writing every day in our classroom so you can imagine how many stories we have now! We're going to publish some of our stories on our site. However, because the stories are pages (in some case chapters!) long and some of us spend weeks working on them, they can get quite long. So, we are going to post them on a separate page (click this link or the Writing Workshop Page link above). When new stories are added, we will post the links here so you can read the fantastic new stories and fact books that we write!

Topic Poems

We have been learning about nouns and verbs and have put that knowledge to good use to write topic poems. If you want to write your own topic poem, here are the steps:

1. Choose your topic

2. Create a list of nouns based on your topic.

3. Create a list of verbs based on your topic and the nouns.

4. Combine the nouns and verbs to create your topic poem.

5. Don't forget to include your title and ending line!!!!

Here are some examples of the poems we wrote this week.

The Meadow ~ by Vicky

People calling,

Kids picking,

Cousins playing,

Flowers wishing.

Animals getting up,

Rainbows glowing,

Sun rising,

Trees growing,

The meadow is happy.

Snakey ~ by Finn

The snake aches,

And then the snake makes a quake,

And then he gets a drink from the lake,

"Ahhh no more ache," said the snake.

Poem ~ by Clodagh

Monsters thrilling,

Houses alive!

Children playing,

Football attacking,

Spooky stuff thrilling in the night,

All ghouls say goodnight!!

Football Match ~ by Conor B

Grass flying around.

A match is finishing,

The stage is colourful.

Poem ~ by Joseph

Pigs oinking,

The sheep is baaing.

The cow is mooing,

The hen is laying,

The donkey is laughing.

Scary Bathroom ~ By Conor C.

Baby pooping,

Old man snoring,

Do-dos flying,

Spaceship crashing,

Doggy blasting.

Birds are flying through the sky,

Bats are singing.

Nature is happy.

Attack of the Maths Books! ~ by James

They have ripped teeth.

They throw sums at you!

"Ahhh Maths Books!"

Girls putting lipstick on the maths books,

Boys doing kung-fu,

Teachers jumping out the window!

Kids running out of the classroom,

Books chasing kids,

Irish words saying bad words in Irish,

Books laughing,

"Ha ha ha."

Inspired by our work with Topic Poems, Finn also wrote a rhyming poem during Writing Workshop.

Jellybots and Bellybots ~ by Finn

Bellybots are fat,

But Jellybots are not like that.

Jelly rhymes with belly,

But they are not the same in vain.

Princess ~ by Anna

Princess blooming in her palace,

With her crown nicely balanced on her head.

She was nicely dressed and looked the best,

Living in the west.

Topic: Time

This month we have been learning different facts about time and we have lots of facts displayed on our Maths board in our classroom! We learned how many days are in a week, which months belong to which seasons and we are learning the Irish names for each month. We have also learned how to read the calendar and we have learned how many seconds are in a minute, half a minute and even how many seconds are in a quarter of a minute!! We've also been doing lots of work against the countdown clocks!

Sunny Pictures

We experimented with line when we drew sunny faces for our Sun Pictures. If you look closely at the pictures below you can see that we used different line lengths, shapes and sizes and we experimented with the colours (using warm colours) and then we used a paint wash.

3D Balloons

Under the strand of Construction we made 3D hot air balloons using milk cartons, pipe cleaners, paper and string. We decorated the base of the hot air balloons using coloured paper (mosaic designs) and designed the balloons so that they had three different sides.

Rockets

Can you spot how we made our rockets 3D? Check the pictures of our rockets in March to see how they have changed!

Rockets

We have been learning how to use oil pastels. Although the oil pastels looked a lot like crayons we found out some interesting facts:

1) You can smudge them with your fingers.

2) You can blend them together to make new colours.

3) You can scratch patterns into them

4) We also learned that rubbing them across different textures (like bricks) can make help to make different designs (like in the sky in our pictures!).

We have been learning about lines too and how using curvy lines can help make pictures look 3D. Can you spot some curvy lines in our pictures?

Check back soon.... you'll notice some changes to our rockets! We're going to be making changes to a part of our rocket to help them look 3D.

Frog Ponds

We sponge painted the pond background and used chalk for the lily pads. The frogs were 3-D because their mouths opened up wide and their tongues are not flat on the paper.

Lets Go Fly A Kite

We made 3-D pictures to show kites flying through the sky. We sponge-painted the sky (quite messy!) and then designed our kites using paper. To create the 3-D effect we made sure that the kites were not flat on the blue background.

What's For Dinner?

We created 3-D art using paper plates to show healthy food - meat, vegetable and fruit. We also designed our own table mats.

CLASS CRESTS

We designed special crests to show what makes our class special. Here are some of the crests we made!

Paired Reading with Sixth Class

Every Wednesday, Ms. Keane O'Hagan's class visit our room to do paired reading. Sixth class listen to us read and help us with words that we might not know. It's great fun to practice reading with older children because they are really helpful and are a great audience!

Colour Wheels

We learned about secondary colours this week. We found out that if you mix:

red and blue you get PURPLE

yellow and blue you get GREEN

red and yellow you get ORANGE

To help us remember the primary and secondary colours we made colour wheels.

My Hat

We learned a new poem called "My Hat." It was about different funny hats. Here are some verses from the poem.

My hat it is too spotty,

Too spotty is my hat.

Because it is too spotty,

I will not wear my hat!!

My hat it is too stripy,

Too stripy is my hat.

Because it is too stripy,

I will not wear my hat!!

My hat it is too spiky,

Too spiky is my hat.

Because it is too spiky,

I will not wear my hat!!

Now it's your turn! Can you figure out what is wrong with these other hats?
