Ms. Farrell’s class in the Irish Times

Take a bow Ms Farrell’s class from last year. They feature this month (November 2009) in the centre pages of the Irish Times supplement “Music in the Classroom”. They drew pictures and Eimear wrote a poem based on the piece of music “The Great Gate at Kiev” from Petrovich Mussorgky. Ms Farrell sent them off to the Irish Times and one year later we are delighted to see our work featured in a national newspaper! Well done to everyone!

Fifth Class School Tour

The 9th of June 2009 was the date of my school tour. I did not have a great sleep the night before because I was so excited. I woke up at half seven and packed my lunch and called for Declan and walked to school. We both brought €15 spending money with us. I arrived at the school at 8.20a.m. and played football. At 9 o’clock we got onto the bus, and I sat beside Ryan. It was great craic! Adam and Kieran were beside us. The girls were singing on the bus, and then the boys joined in.

We arrived at Croke Park  at 10.30 .We sat down and had a bite to eat . Then we went inside and met our tour guide. Her name was Lynn. We into a theatre where we watched a game from the 1997 All Ireland Gaelic and Hurling  finals. In the Gaelic final it was Kerry v Mayo, and Kerry won. In the Hurling final Clare won the match against Tipperary. We had a quiz in the museum after that, and my team with Adam, Kieran, Ryan and myself WON!!! . We were called Joes. We went into the Interactive room and played Hurling and Gaelic. During the tour of the stadium, we went into the warm up room, which had a big net where the players take shots before a match. Then we went out beside the pitch .We weren`t allowed on to the pitch because if people walked on it, it would be ruined. There were people at one end setting up the stage for the “Take That” concert. We went up on to the Cusack stand. Facing us was the Hogan stand. On our right was Hill 16 and under the security station was the Nally stand. Then we went into the Corporate area where the famous and wealthy people watch the game and get food.

After our tour of the stadium and museum, we went to Elverys, a sports shop across the road from the Croke Park Hotel. I bought a small ball in Croke Park and a big ball in Elverys. Then we got back on the bus and went to a park beside Dublin Castle called Dubh Linn, which in English means Black Pool. We all ate our lunch in a circle on the grass. When we were finished eating, we all got in a big circle and played Bomb, which was great fun.

Then we went into Dublin Castle and met our tour guide. His name was Dáire. He has been working at the Castle for three years and he knows a lot! My favourite room in the castle was the Throne Room, where we saw the throne made for Queen Victoria. The legs of the throne had to be cut off so that she could sit on it because she was so small! My second favourite room was St. Patrick`s Hall where the Presidents of Ireland are inaugurated. My third favourite room was underground where we saw the castle walls and the river Poddle. There were a lot of coins in the water. In the Dublin Castle gift shop, I bought a good luck charm for my mum.

When we were on the way home the girls were singing again but this time the boys joined in. Kieran was singing “Glory, Glory, Man United”. I did not join in because I am a Liverpool supporter!

It was a great school tour, and I went home tired but happy!

A Day With Éanna Ní Lamhna

On Tuesday, the 28th of April 2009, Éanna Nì Lamhna came to our school. Éanna Ní Lamhna is on “Mooney Goes Wild” every Friday on RTÉ Radio 1. She answers listener’s questions about nature and science. So, it was great to have an actual scientist and a person who knows everything there is to know about nature take the time to take 3rd, 4th 5th and 6th  Classes outside on a nature walk.

First, Éanna came into our classroom, and everyone asked some questions about birds or trees that they saw. Then we discussed what nature we might see outside. Éanna told us about the cycle of birds, hibernating animals and where some birds live. Did you know that the squirrels do not hibernate; they just sleep, and if it’s a bad day they go back to sleep after eating some of their stores of nuts - if they are smart enough to remember where they hid them!

Afterwards our question-and-answer session we went outside. We looked at some of the trees in our school grounds. We saw the lime tree, the mountain ash, the sycamore and the beech tree. Then using our pooters, we were told to get some insects for close observation.

Immediately, everyone ran to the Biblical Garden. We looked under big stones to find the creepy crawlies underneath. Declan, Eimear and Liam held the slimiest slugs ever! Éanna told us that a slug is both genders at once, so there are no male or female slugs and all slugs lay eggs.

Moving up to the hill, we looked at wild flowers. Éanna says there are no such things as weeds, only flowers growing in the wrong place. We saw the daisy, (the “day’s eye”, as it closes at night), the speedwell, (“so tiny that you might miss it” with its four blue petals), and the dandelion (“if you eat the leaves you’ll wet the bed”). We also saw a swallow flying back and forth. We wondered why it was doing that, but it was actually flying around to catch flies in the air. Éanna said that birds don’t migrate because it’s cold, they migrate because all the insects die out in winter and they can’t get any food. At the end of our nature walk, we set the insects free and Éanna had to go to take 6th class on their walk. Mrs. Farrell let us stay out for a bit longer, and we talked about what the insects did in our pooters. Some claimed that the ants ate their woodlouse and their fly!

Éanna, if you are reading this, 5th Class would like to give you a big thank you!

They each received a family ticket to the Dundalk Bowling Alley. Our other teams from 4th and 6th classes also did very well.

Music in the Classroom

On the 21st October, 5th and 6th classes visited Dundalk I.T. The R.T.E. Concert Orchestra were playing a concert. Luckily we were able to get tickets. We got a bus to the college. The conductor was Gearóid Grant. The person who sang the songs was Emmanuel Lawlor. The dancers came from a ballet school. Other schools from Dundalk, Dunleer and Navan also came. The Orchestra performed Peter and the Wolf, Beauty and the Beast, the Numbers Song, The Phantom Regiment and the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. They also played a selection of nursery rhymes and songs from the musical Hairspray. Everyone tried to sing along to the nursery rhymes and The Phantom Regiment, and we pretended we were dead soldiers for The Phantom Regiment as well. We danced and did actions to the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. The best part of the concert was the nursery rhymes. We all really enjoyed our day out in DKIT at the Music in the Classroom concert.
