OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

WHAT IS THE
SHOE BOX APPEAL?
The Shoe Box
Appeal or Operation Christmas Child Started in North Wales in the
early 1990’s. It is now the world’s largest children’s Christmas
project. Last year almost seven and a half million needy children in
nearly 100 countries received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox,
and over 300,000 of those boxes came from Ireland ! Many of these
children are in orphanages, street-kid shelters, hospitals or in
families stuck in the poverty trap. Their Christmas day is just like
any other day, and for many their shoebox is the only present they
receive. It means so much to the boy or girl to know that someone,
far away, whom they will never meet, is thinking of them. Last year
shoeboxes from Ireland went to Romania, Belarus, Croatia, Ukraine,
Serbia, Armenia, Mozambique and Swaziland.
Read more about it on the Sixth Class Page
We were overwhelmed by the response to
Operation Christmas Box. There were over 130 boxes handed in to 6th
class. The boxes will be sent to children in Armenia, Croatia,
Kosovo and Belarus. We are sure that the children in these countries
really appreciate the time and effort that the families in St.
Peter's took to fill up the shoe boxes and wrap them in Christmas
paper. Thanks to Ms. Keane O'Hagan and 6th Class for organising the
appeal.

Darver, Dromiskin Historical Society Essay Reading Evening
Last year
the Historical Society organised an essay competition “Tales
from my Grandparents’ time”. There was an excellent response
from both St. Michael’s N.S. in Darver and St. Peter’s N.S.
in Dromiskin. On Thursday 19th November 2009 boys
and girls from both schools were invited to the Old School
in Dromiskin to read out their essays. A huge crowd
including parents, grandparents, pupils, teachers and Fr. Mc
Enroe turned up on the night. Everyone agreed that it was a
thoroughly enjoyable evening and great compliments were paid
to all those who read out their work. Tea and refreshments
were provided afterwards and a big thank you to all the
members of the Historical Society for organising the event.
Particular thanks to Doctor B Flanagan who liaised with both
schools and made the night possible.

THE CROSSING
Huge congratulations to the school choir, who travelled to The
Waterfront, Belfast on Sunday 16th October to sing with the Cross
Border Orchestra. All the children were absolutely fantastic and
were a credit to the school and their parents. Their wonderful
singing was only possible due to the tremendous effort of Ms.
Farrell, who has been practising with the choir for weeks during
lunchtime so that they were note perfect. Photographs and more
information will follow shortly.

Rugby
Cups in Dromiskin
Local Dundalk man and Leinster
R.F.U. coach, Colin O Hare was a very welcome visitor to
Dromiskin N.S recently. With him he had a veritable treasure
trove of prestigious cups from the world of European rugby. To
have the Triple Crown trophy, Grand Slam Cup and Heineken Cup
together in one place is a rare and historic occasion. That they
are all held by Irish teams, at present, is a source of great
pride and a unique achievement. The children and teachers of
Dromiskin certainly appreciated the very impressive display of
silverware as some of these pictures show. In years to
come these will be a valued memento of a golden era in Irish
rugby. Many thanks to Colin from all in Dromiskin school and
well done to Ireland and Leinster.

Goal
Jersey Day
Lots of
children from Dromiskin wore in their favourite sports’ jerseys
on Friday 9th October to raise funds for national
charity Goal. Soccer, Gaelic, Rugby and even Baseball were all
represented in a very colourful display. The €2 brought in by
each child will go to a worthy cause. Our children and parents
are very kind and thoughtful. |

Mind Your Language
There
was great excitement in 5th class in St. Peter's N.S. Dromiskin
when they were selected to appear on the RTE children's show
Watch Your Language. Three children, Eimear Johnston, Róisín Mc
Manus and Ciaran Mulligan made up the team but the whole class
were invited as part of the audience to provide support. On
Monday 13th July they were pitted against opponents from Gorey,
Co. Wexford and class teacher Ms. Michele Farrell and their
parents were very proud to see their young charges emerge
victorious. For their troubles they each received prizes of an
MP4 player as well as an RTE goody bag. The whole class had a
fascinating time in the studios in Donnybrook and finished off
their day with a visit to the RTE canteen where they celebrated
in style!
