St Peter’s NS caused an upset in the Cumann na mBunscol schools’ quiz (large school section) when they pipped favourites, St. Mary’s, Knockbridge, in the county final held in Knockbridge on Tuesday 21st November 2017. Knockbridge were strongly tipped to win as they had powered through the mid Louth qualifiers with an excellent score of 78/80. Meanwhile, Dromiskin were lucky to squeak through to the decider after a lucky sudden death victory over an unfortunate Kilkerley team.
However, undaunted, our young quiz members worked very hard covering topics including History, Geography, Science, Politics, Movies, Music, Maths, Pictures, Sport (especially GAA) and General Knowledge. All this preparation was to pay rich dividends. From the get go Dromiskin and Knockbridge were locked in a titanic struggle with never more than a point between them. Trailing in their wake going in to the last round were such formidable teams as the CBS Dundalk, Réalt na Mara, Ardee, Monasterboice and Drogheda.
However with both teams scoring 10/10 in Round 8 we headed in to another nail biting tie breaker to try and separate these two mighty opponents who had both totalled 77/80. Five questions were asked and after what seemed like an eternity quizmaster Brian Mc Donnell, Principal of Knockbridge, announced that eventually we had a winner. Shouts of joy and disbelief revealed that it was the girls and boys from Dromiskin who had emerged on top with a perfect score in the decider to defeat Knockbridge by one point.
The team were presented with lovely plaques and a fabulous cup but most importantly the title of Cumann na mBunscol quiz champions of County Louth for 2017. Commiserations to valiant runners up Knockbridge – they have a fantastic team – and no doubt we we will meet them again at later quizzes. Many thanks to teachers Ms Keane and Mr Mc Comish and of course our loyal supporters who provided lifts and cheered the team on.
