What an achievement and what a great day as the girls’ GAA football team won Cumann na mBunscol’s Setanta Cup for the first time ever! Coaches Ms Smyth and Ms Lambert were proud and delighted as were a large crowd of parents, grandparents, teachers, brothers, sisters and fellow classmates gathered in the Grove Field, Castlebellingham, on Saturday 11th November.

After preliminary victories over  Dillonstown NS, St Francis NS and a semi final win over Muchgrange NS, from Cooley, our young stars faced the formidable Collon NS in the prestigious county final. Ms Smyth and Ms Lambert did extra training including tough lunch time games against the boys which really put the girls to the pin of their collar!

So when the referee threw the ball in at 10.45 on Saturday morning they were well prepared for the challenge that lay ahead. From the start their  passing, catching, blocking and tackling were a joy to behold. Excellent goals and points were kicked and fisted throughout and their concentration and determination was an example to all young players. Another feature of the game was the excellent sportsmanship shown by all participants from both Collon and Dromiskin. The game was tough but  fair  and it was great to see such respect for fellow players and  the referee.

The final score was 5-7 to 1-2 in favour of the Dromiskin girls. Afterwards, Cumann na mBunscol chairperson and Principal of Harestown NS, Fiachra Bell, presented the beautiful Setanta Cup to the proud St Peter’s Captain.  There was a loud three cheers for the losing team before the girls and supporters set off on a rousing cavalcade around Dromiskin with the cup proudly on display. A memorable morning finished off with some goodies (healthy of course!) in Mulligan’s shop.

Well done to all the players and coaches Ms Smyth and Ms Lambert. Thank you to our loyal supporters and to the Cumann na mBunscol officials who organised a superb morning’s entertainment. Special mention to Declan Costello who showed commendable restraint and patience in videoing proceedings!! Click below for more photos
