What excitement there was in Junior Infants when Ms Lambert brought in an incubator and six eggs to see if they could successfully hatch young chicks.

They lay in the incubator for 21 long days eagerly watched by Ms Lambert and all the boys and girls in the class. In the last few days tension reached fever pitch when strange cheeps could be heard, the eggs moved and then the shells started to crack!

There were screams and shouts of joy on Thursday 2 March when on arrival in the classroom at 8.55am there for all to see were four baby chicks alive and well. Number five hatched on the next day but unfortunately we discovered that egg number six was empty with nobody at home.

Our five new arrivals settled in very well and were smothered with tender loving and care by Ms Lambert and her pupils. Before long they had their names – Peter, Paul, Beaky, Fluffy and Fuzzy and lots of classes visited to see our new friends.

The young chicks thrived and they were so cuddly and cute. However all good things must come to an end and on Monday evening a kind farmer came along to take them to a new home. Who knows maybe we will be hatching some of their eggs before long!!
