Mrs. Kerr's Thatched House

ü    This lovely old thatched house is situated in Drumleck in the parish of Dromiskin

ü    It is called Drumleck House

ü     It was built 400 years ago, but it is not known who built it

ü    One thatcher estimated that it would cost €20,000 to thatch the house

ü    It gets thatched every 10 years, and it takes a week to complete the thatching

ü    When the house is getting thatched the thatcher puts bluestone on it so that it won’t go black so quickly

ü    Magpies put holes in it so if a net is put up it prevents them doing so

ü    It could cost €1,500 to buy the emulsion to paint the house

ü    The thatched house has just recently been thatched

ü    A house up the road was once thatched also

ü    A 4,000 year old house was found while the motorway was being dug.  It is believed that it was thatched

ü     The railway line runs at the back of the thatched house, and there used to be a railway station up the road from Drumleck House

ü    A battle was fought at a house on the “Hill of the Skulls”

ü    Mrs. Kerr said she would prefer a slated house because getting it thatched is too dear nowadays
