  The Old School

The old school was built in 1927, under the management of Canon Johnson, parish priest.

It educated the children for approximately 50 years before the new school was built in February 1976.

From 1926 to 1940, before amalgamation took place, the girls and boys were taught separately in 2 classroom units.

Principals of the girls’ school were Mrs Mc Ardle and Mrs Halligan assisted by a junior assistant mistress Miss Colliter.

Headmasters of the boys’ school were Mr T McArdle and James Morgan.

Following amalgamation, Mr Morgan became the first Principal of the  mixed school with Miss May Predergast and Mrs Byrne as assistants.

Mrs. Morgan Remembers….

§       The teacher Mrs Morgan taught knitting & sewing to 5th & 6th class girls from 2:00-3:00p.m. on Tuesdays & Fridays.

§       The toilets were kept reasonably clean, and were outside.

§       When Mrs. Morgan started teaching in 1963 there were open fire places.

§        If you had a cold they would put you beside the huge open fire.

§       When it was raining they put  your coat over the open fire.

§       In late 1963 central heating was put in place.

§       No one was ever expelled from the school.

§       At first the children sat on benches, in later years they sat on chairs.

§       The children used inkwells for their pens.

Every morning someone would go around and fill the inkwells with powder and water.

§       All the teachers and parents were strict!

If you were bold in school and your neighbour knew you were bold and they told your parents, you would get a slap at home!!!
