   Dromiskin House

The present Dromiskin House was built in 1826.  It’s a very important piece of Dromiskin history because the Primates (i.e. Bishops) of Armagh  lived there. The house that now stands there is a modern house because the old house was demolished. It was rebuilt in the 19th Century.  In 1350 the Primate of Armagh made Dromiskin his principal residence since it was within the Pale, and built a large palace in the grounds of Dromiskin house, approximately where the walled garden is now.  The ruins of this palace were discovered in the early 19th Century when the place was cleared to build the garden wall. Milo Sweetman the Primate died here in 1380 and is buried in the graveyard. After the Reformation the Primates, now Protestant, moved to Termonfeckin.

Some interesting facts

§       Tommy Makem, the singer with the Clancy Brothers, lived in Dromiskin House as well as the Carrolls, the Crowthers and Miss Halligan.  The McMahons live there now.

§       There was a ballroom that was locked up because of a ghost.  After the party a man was meant to clean it up but he stopped for a rest and looked in the mirror to see a reflection of a dead person dancing!

§       Some people say that the person died after the dance but we guess we’ll never know!
