1st Class - winners of the Golden Boot for January & February!

We were very busy on Friday 10th June as we had an Art Day! Here we are hard at work!

  Bird Paintings

We learned how to do a paint wash, make a wax resist picture and how to use outlines to make things stand out.

  Vase of Flowers

We did another wax resist picture, this time with a vase and flowers. We tried to make interesting patterns on the vases and to use different colours to make the flowers stand out.

  Name Designs

We spent a long time doing these pictures because we took our time planning the designs and patterns. Teacher wrote our name in bubble writing and then we designed the patterns around the names. We used different lines, colours and shapes.

  Dinosaurs

The last paint wash picture we made was when we designed our own dinosaurs! We planned our pictures first and tried to make up a new dinosaur that nobody else would draw. Then we chose the colour washes we wanted to use. We also made sure we outlined our drawings in crayon so that they stood out.

  Response to Music

~ Lightning Bird Wind River Man (Declan O'Rourke)

We listened to Declan O'Rourke's new song in class today. We each came up with our own version of what we thought a "lightning bird wind river man" would look like.

Primary Colour Patterns

We had a maths puzzle to figure out today and we needed to use paint! We had to design 3 panels using primary colours to make patterns. We then had to use primary colour paint. The puzzle was that we couldn't use the same crayon and paint in the same panel. We all managed to figure it out.

  Science Experiments

Our class and Ms. Larney's class entered the "Discover Science" awards this year. We completed lots of different science experiments. We had lots of fun entering the competition and best of all we WON! The school got a lovely new plaque to hang in the corridor and we'll all get a certificate. Here are some of the experiments we did!

Measuring our hand spans

Our partners drawing around our hands

Counting how many objects our hands could hold.... which hand can hold more?

We estimated first and then checked to see if we were right

Guzzler Patrol

Our class is in charge of Guzzler Patrol in the school. We make sure there are no energy guzzlers in every class and we also check up on the teachers ( & Mr. Mulligan!) to make sure that everyone is trying to reduce the amount of electricity they waste.

We make sure projectors and computers are turned off at lunchtime and home time

We check all the lights are turned off when it is bright and when there is nobody in the room. We also check the bathroom lights.

#

We also check the laptop trolley is plugged out when it is not needed and we make sure that all the laptops are plugged in so that they only need to be charged once.

We check that the taps are not running in the bathrooms and that the taps in the classroom are turned off.

We also recycle our paper in the green bins.

We turn off our radiators when it is cool so we don't waste heat. We also use a towel for spills/cleaning to save the paper towels.

We recycle our small plastic bottles and we make sure the visualisers are turned off as they waste electricity if they are on standby.

Examples of our experiments

OUR NEW LOGPILE

We were in charge of making the new school logpile. We collected lots of logs, sticks and branches to use. We were very careful about how we built the logpile as you need to be careful because if it's too big we would get rats instead of bugs and that's NOT what we want! We want lots of creepy crawleys.... like beetles, woodlouse and ladybirds. The logpile is outside our class window so we can keep a close eye on any new developments!

SPORTS DAY

We had GREAT fun on our sports day this year. We had 12 races in total and we were really tired by the end. Our favourite races were the relay races, the backwards run and the sack race.

Fit For Life

Ms Halpenny organised a great day for the parents and children of 1st class. The mums and dads (much to their enjoyment!!) got to come into school and learn how to play games with their children. Thanks to all parents who came in and participated, your children really enjoyed the experience!

Warm and Cool Colours

We're learning about warm and cool colours. We made patterned cool and warm fish and designed warm and cool coloured snakes.

Shape Robots

Using paper to construct robots.

DOODLES

Van Gogh ~ Starry Night

Looking and responding to Van Gogh's "Starry Night."

Roaring Rockets

Using different textures to create the space background, we used bright colours to draw and colour striking space rockets. We made them into 3D rockets by adding crepe paper.

Book Covers

As part of World Book Day, we designed book covers based on our favourite Panda books!

Paper Plate Art

"Is maith liom...."

                                                HISTORY

                        The Wicked Fairy of Tara

We listened to the story of Fionn and the wicked fairy Aillen. We then

created our very own comic strips about the story! We learned that

it's very important to sequence the events so that people can read

the comic strip properly.

                                     Maths Board ~ November

Look closely at our Maths board in our classroom.

Can you tell what we've been learning about this month?

                                (we've been very busy!!!)

                                            MATISSE ~ ICARUS

Matisse was a French artist who lived a long time ago. He heard the

story of "Icarus" and made a collage to show what happened when

Icarus flew too close to the sun. We made our own Icarus pictures.

                                                        PATTERNED FLAGS

We divided the flags into quarters and made a different pattern in

each quarter.

                                    Personal Crests

We designed our own crests. They were divided into quarters.

Each quarter had information about us!

                                                        Christopher Columbus

                                                            Our Clocks

                                                Benchball

We've been learning how to play benchball. You have to run a lot and pass the

ball to your goalie to score and it's lots of fun!

                                                Pirates!!!

After reading "The Troll" by Julia Donaldson, we learned how

to draw pirates.

     Our MONSTER ICT project

                                            Wordle

Instead of using pencils, crayons or paint during art this week we are using computers! We're

using a site called Wordle to create funky word patterns. Why don't you try and create your

own pattern HERE? Click any of the images above to view a larger version.

                                       We Love Reading!

We read "You Can't Eat a Princess" by Gillian Rogerson. It is about

a princess who must save her dad from aliens! We really liked it

and it made us feel really hungry because there are lots of

lovely yummy food in the illustrations.

We used the book to learn what an author and illustrator are.

We also learned what a "blurb" is and why it is there.

We liked the book so much that we're working on drawing our own

alien pictures!

                                    HALLOWEEN WORK

Halloween Addition Puzzle        Halloween Subtraction Puzzle
