Second class are donating €350 from their Communion money to Bóthar. We have decided to send hives of bees.

To learn more about bees we are getting a local beekeeper in to talk to us and show us the bees up close!!

We'll be learning loads of information, using the webquest HERE.

We will be learning about Sudoku in June. Hopefully by the end of the school year we'll be Sudoku-champs!

We'll be using the sudoku from HERE if you want to try them yourself! (requires Adobe or equivalent PDF). Alternatively, you can visit THIS SITE.

Walk to School Week

On Wednesday 17th May, we had a 100% record for travelling to school by walking, cycling or park n' stride. We won the competition for Wednesday (as Mr. Mulligan said, "it's hard to beat 100%!!").

Texaco Art Competition

There was great news this month as we found out that two girls from our class got special commendations in the Texaco Art Competition. The standard for this competition is very high and there are more than 30,000 entries submitted. Well done to Annie and Lucy for their wonderful accomplishment!

First Holy Communion

We are sooooooooooooo excited in Second Class this month because it is our Holy Communion on Saturday 22nd May. We have been practising extremely hard and we are all working on our readings, singing and prayers. This year our class will use actions for the Our Father. You can find a Word Version HERE and a Powerpoint HERE.

On the day, children are asked to be seated in the church before 10.45. This will give them ample time to find their seats, organise readings and get settled.

The children from Second Class will make a contribution towards Bóthar this year. It is a very special thing that the boys and girls are doing and we are all very proud of them. The class will decide next week which animal they would like to donate. To find the catalogue, you can click HERE. You can also visit the Bóthar website to see the wonderful work that this organisation does. The children will research the various animals next week, so the class can decide together which animal they would like to donate.

OUR FIRST CONFESSION

In March, we made our First Confession in St. Peter's Church. We made lots of art to decorate the church, including art for the ambo, altars and pillars. We also decorated our classroom, drawing pictures of the parable of The Good Shepherd.

Our First Confession art work - this work was on the Ambo in the church.

This was the artwork that was on the altar in the church for our First Confession. It featured the Good Shepherd and the Lost Sheep.

~~~~~~
These were some of our pictures from our First Confession. We listened to the story from the Bible that described how the Good Shepherd looked after all of his sheep, even the one who got lost.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PRINTING

We used various printing materials to make pictures today. Some of us just experimented using bottle caps, matchsticks, toothpicks and other household items to make patterns. Some people in the class used the same materials to make cars, houses and other pictures.

Golden Boot Champs for January 2010! Our class set a new school record with a 96% turnout on COW Day!! We're hoping we can reach a 100% turnout before the end of the year. We have also won WOOF in April!!!

We have been going to the church every week to learn about the Stations of the Cross. We are working on drawing each station.

We made a new poster for the Ambo in the church for Easter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We made a Anti-Guzzler poster to help our school earn our new Green Flag.
We're learning about Arctic animals this month. We are going to research animals using information from the internet. We're going to learn how to make powerpoint presentations so we can share our research with our classmates and people who visit our page on the website - so check back often to see our progress!!
 You can see some of the links we're using on our IWB Links Page HERE (it's under "Geography").
BUSY CITIES
We were learning about maps this week and created our very own cities using coloured paper. We then used our new vocabulary (North, South, East, West) to talk about our pictures and give directions to our friends!
STARRY NIGHTS
Looking and Responding to Vincent Van Gogh
We examined Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night painting and talked about what he painted, the colours he used and how he created the patterns in the sky. Then it was our turn! We created our own versions of his painting using crayon.
Paired Reading with a Difference!
Instead of reading Horrid Henry this week with 6th Class we worked on the school laptops. Sixth Class did a fantastic job of proofreading our Halloween poems and our Runner stories and helped us type them up. We used Microsoft Word to type our work and Sixth Class showed us how to use clipart to make our writing look even better. The finished writing will be displayed here shortly. You can also check the ICT Page for more information.
We also showed Sixth Class how to use the Interactive Whiteboard.
  Halloween
Once again we used tints and shades to create our pieces of art. This time we created a background for our spooky silhouettes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  BLOW PAINTINGS

We used paint and straws to create these blow paintings... it was hard work and we were puffed!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Planets
After studying how to create shade and tints, we created our own colourful planets!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Irish

Our Irish phrase this week was "an bhfuil cead agam..." We were learning how to ask permission to do lots of things! You can see some of them on our signs that are inside the classroom.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Space Houses
We were learning about different types of houses this month. We looked at mud huts, ice houses and houses from Ireland... just to name a few types! Then we used our imagination to design houses that we could use in space! Which house would you like to live in?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Planets

We have been learning about non-fiction text and how it is important to have correct information for your audience. We studied the planets in our solar system and each group created a factfile about their planet.

MATHS ~ MEASUREMENT

We used different forms of measurement to measure things around the school. We were trying to find out which form of measurement is the most accurate. We used links, string, handspans, footprints, the metre stick and centimetre strips. We found out that the metre and centimetre strips were the most accurate and all the people in our group got the same answer. The links and string were not as accurate as the metre because it depended on how tight we held the string and links. We found out that the handspans and footprints were the least accurate because it depended on your height and the size of your feet and hands.

ART ATTACK!!

Last year we learned about primary, secondary, warm and cool colours. This year we're learning about how to create shades and tints!! We had to mix black to make the primary or secondary colour a darker shade and we had to mix white to make the colour a lighter tint. We worked in pairs, with one partner making the colour darker and the other partner making the colour lighter. We'll be using what we learned about shades and tints in our Art lessons this week when we create our very own planets!!

CLASSROOM BEEHIVE

We designed a class beehive. Each cell had our initials on it and we made them lovely and colourful.

There was no rest for us on our first day back! We started writing straight away and learned about acrostic poems. If you want to try and write your own acrostic check out ReadWriteThink for an acrostic interactive tool!

An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line.
