CONFIRMATION 2010

NEWGRANGE VISIT 2009

PUBLIC SPEAKING 2010

~ Report by Chloe

Every year 6th class  do Public speaking. But this year Ms. Keane O Hagan has allowed 5th class to participate because half of 5th class are mixed in with all of 6th class. Even though 5th class are not in the finals, we are holding our own competition. Public speaking is when you pick a topic and write a speech on it.

For example Daniel did his Public speaking on Ant and Dec. Did you know Ant and Dec live beside each other?

Jack did his on Coca  Cola. Did you know Coke can rot away a nail in just 4 days?

Then the judge picks the most interesting and humourous speeches and sends them through to the next round.  The people in 6th class go through to a final and then our speech and Drama teacher, Ms. Boyle, will pick the winner, second and third place and they get an award.

Fifth class has had their final already. Jack came in 1st place. Chloe came in 2nd place. Hannah came in joint 3rd place with Caoibheadh. Ruth came in 4th place and Daniel came in 5th place.

Best of luck to the finalists from Sixth Class next week!!

BLUE SUEDE SHOES

~Report by Hannah

For our art collage we got a sheet with a shoe on it. We stuck on blue material, blue stickers, blue beads ,blue paper and blue straws. We also put blue paint and coloured in our shoes. We had all different designs on each shoe. Before we designed our shoes we learnt about rock and roll and we were listening to the song "Blue Suede Shoes". We all know Blue Suede Shoes was sung by Elvis Preslely but it is a rock and roll song written and first recorded by Carl Perkins in 1955. It is considered to be one of the first rock and roll records and incorporated elements of blues, country and pop music.Afterwards,we watched a little of Grease and learnt about what they wore. The girls presented themselves in A line skirts and the boys wore leather jackets and their hair styles were called quiffs. They were known as "Teddy Boys".It was great fun.

 FRENCH DAY

~ Report by Adam

On French Day we will have French food like crępes croissants and many more varieties of food. Sixth class will go down to the lower classes and teach songs like Si Tu le Soleil, La Tęte, Les Epaules Gnout, and Les Pieds. All of Fifth and Sixth Class will do projects on an aspect of French life. Some of the projects are the Eiffel Tower, Lyon football club and different French cities. French Day is a day enjoyed by everyone. Hopefully it can be as good as a success as it was last year.

Innovation in Poetry Competition

Everybody in our class wrote a poem for the Innovation in Poetry Competition. The theme was “Unique and original poems”. Some ideas were: creating your own creature, machine or gadget, imagining to be invisible, becoming a giant etc. or using lots of action words to describe animals. For example: Woof, Meow, Oink.

The standard was very high and all poems were sent off to the Navan Education Centre. Niamh Barrett and Ruth Blaney were winners and will be presented with their awards in the Navan Education Centre on the 14th of June. Their poems will also be published in a book. The two winning poems are

DEATH VALLEY

~By Ruth

I walked out the door

And across the street

I strolled into school

And sat in my usual seat

The teacher did the roll call

She didn’t say my name

She didn’t see me

Because I wasn’t the same

In this world I am human

Though no-one else can see

This used to be my home

Until I was moved to Death Valley

Death Valley is a place

For the undead

“It isn’t very nice”

Everybody said

I don’t think it is either

It’s nothing at all like home

Maybe I hate it there so much

Because I am there alone

WHAT I WOULD DREAM

~by Niamh

It comes to this time every night

When all the little children are tucked up tight

They close their eyes and keep them tight

Wondering what they will see tonight.

Colours and sparkles dart across the big massive stage,

Awakened by the sound of their mums you're late for school

They sit up and wonder

What will be the next adventure?

MICHAEL JACKSON-EARTH SONG

~Report by Courtney

My class and I split up into groups and made jigsaw puzzles. We all drew the shape of the jigsaw puzzle and we all got into groups of six. We picked a piece of the jigsaw and drew  something about the Earth e.g. littering, pollution, etc.. and then we coloured  them in and stuck them back together.  Every  person in the class really put in effort.  we hung them up  they looked really nice. The song was very good and very touching.  It made a lot of sense that we should think before we litter. The class and I had a brilliant time learning about the Earth song and making our own jigsaws. I hope we can do that again next year because I had a brilliant time learning about it.

SHARED READING

Ms. Keane O Hagan’s 6th and 5th Class have been doing shared reading with Ms O Rourke’s 2nd Class for the past year. While we are down there we help the Second Class with reading, writing and typing. Sometimes, they teach us how to do things like Word Sorts, which we have been taught how to do by Ms. O Rourke. They usually know how to do the Word Sorts because they are Word Sort masters! ~ Report by Eimear

SPORTS DAY 2010

It was Sports Day on the 26/5/2010. We did all sorts of races from Junior  Infants to Sixth class. There were a lot of helpers.  Mr Hamilton who was in charge of writing down the winners. There was Pat McKenna who prepared the lines for Sports Day and we had great support from Mrs Farrell , Ms Smith and Mr McComish who was holding the line as we finished.  We all enjoyed ourselves and had a great day.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHALLENGE 2010

Ms Keane O Hagan's 5th and 6th classes were delighted to receive a lovely award for their prize winning logo in the Primary Schools challenge 2010. This competition was organised by the Louth County Enterprise Board. They received a specially commissioned trophy and also certificates for each member of the class. Well done!!

LOUTH COUNTY ENTERPRISE BOARD

~ Report by Orna

Miss Shaw showed us how County Enterprise Board works.

First we did an activity, to show us what skills we would need.

The first game was we had to communicate without speaking, (Communication)

The second game we had to catch a tennis ball, (coordination and team work)

E.g. speed, team work and coordination.

Then she asked us questions and we got aptitude test on what we had learnt.

Then she gave us goody bags to take home with us.

We all enjoyed the day with Miss Shaw.

THE TEACHERS VS. SIXTH CLASS

Once again the teachers were victorious (despite some dubious tackling by a certain male teacher who shall remain nameless!) The game was very close, but in the end the pros won, with a final score of 2-1. This marks two in a row for the teachers. Will next year's Sixth fair any better?

On the 26th of May 2010 it was about ten past two to be winners of the Teachers versus Sixth Class football match. The Pupils were full of hope and so were the Teachers. When we walked out of the school the applause was amazing.

Kick off was to us in the first half. It was a very boring five minutes but when the Teachers scored it started getting tense. At half time our players switched over. We equalised at ten minutes. We got a corner and crossed it in for Kieran Mulligan who did a Lionel Messi goal and celebrated by running around the pitch topless and we made a king chair and he lay down on it posing! In the twelfth minute disaster struck, when the Teachers shot and it deflected off one of our players and went in. It was then two one to the Teachers. In the thirteenth minute Mr. Mulligan took Adam Carolan to the ground when Adam had broken his arm earlier that month and got Mr. Mulligan sent off.

At full time the Pupils were beaten by the Teachers by one goal. We were devastated!

~ Report by Christopher.

GAELIC LEAGUE 2010

~By Kieran

This year’s Gaelic league was possibly the best ever. The six captains were Adam O’Connor, Liam Keenan, Ryan Dempsey, Declan Gernon, Liam Fussey and myself, Kieran Mulligan. The names of the teams were Vanilla, Dromiskin G.F.C, The Red Devils, The Joes Juniors, The Galaxies and Louth. It was run as follows. The teams play each other twice and the four teams with the most points are then entered into the semi-finals.  In the first semi-final my team ,Louth, beat Liam Fussey’s team, The Galaxies, very narrowly. In the second semi Adam O’Connor’s team Vanilla drew with Declan Gernon’s team, The Joes Juniors. Adam’s team prevailed in the replay. In the final Adam’s team came out on top. A special thanks to Mr.Mulligan for organising the league and being the referee.

GREEN FLAG 2010

~ Report by Niamh

Success  for  St Peter’s strikes again! After  all our hard work,  we were successful in getting our fifth Green Flag.  This year the flag was for energy emissions.  To win this we had people from 2nd class go around at lunchtime to check and make sure that all switches were off.  We have C.O.W days and W.O.O.F days which stand for Cycle On Wednesday and Walk  Out On Friday. This stops us from using cars!   The Green Schools Committee go around all the classes and see who   cycles, walks, parks and strides or carpools.  Then they would add the totals and see which class won.  Then they calculate the percentages for the month and the class that won get off homework and get either Woff the dog or the Golden Boot.  The Green Schools Committee did this hard work , which included, from 6th Class, Declan and Niamh, from 5th Class, Chloe and Martin, and from 4th Class, Donal and Callie.  Mr Mulligan picked two names out of a hat to go to Dublin to collect the prize.  Only two could go and Callie and Donal were picked.  When they came back with the Green Flag, Declan was proud to hold it on his Confirmation Day for the entrance procession.

Congratulations to sixth class who have donated 10% of their confirmation money to TLC, an African charity that adopts and cares for abandoned babies and babies with HIV. Other charities they donated to include:

Childline,

World Vision,

Trócaire,

Brainwave,

Breast Cancer

And Alzheimers.

The parents from Sixth Class made a presentation to Ms. Keane O'Hagan for all her hard work with the Confirmation class.

ARTWORK

THE SILVER SWORD

~ Report by Olivia

In April 5th and 6th got their novel The Silver Sword. It was very interesting to read. The story was about a family named the Balicki’s. They were a Polish family during the time of World War 2. The Balicki children had a frightful but an exciting life as they made their way to Switzerland in search of their parents.

On their travels they met quite a number of different people and creatures. But just as it happened the oldest boy got Tuberculosis. He was put in solitary confinement to keep the germs away from other people in his surroundings.

The Balicki’s found a new member for their family. He was a young boy named Jan at the age of twelve and often behaved inappropriately. By the end of the story he changes his attitude completely. He sacrificed his favourite pet for one of his very best friends.

World War 2 Projects

~ By Jack & Aaron

After finishing our novel “The Silver Sword” which was about a family’s survival during world war 2 the pupils of 6th and 5th class have done projects that vary in subject about the war The topics are The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings by Liam Fussey,. Artillery in World War 2 by Adam and Dylan, Japan by Daniel, Japanese war crimes by Niall and Kieran. Auschwitz by Roisin and Nikayla, Ireland during World War 2 by Hannah and Ciara, Pearl Harbour by Ryan, Evacuees by Niamh and Sian, Guns used in World War 2 by Christopher and Edward, World War 2 Aircrafts by Liam Keenan and Declan, The Gestapo Amy and Eimear, World War 2 Allied Leaders by Clodagh, Ciara and Orna, Hitler Youth by Olivia, Battle of Britain by Caoibhedh and Chloe and last of all D-Day.

~ Report by Liam F.

My favourite project was The Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bombings by me Liam.F, because I found it interesting while I looked up my information. The one project that touched me most emotionally was Auschwitz, because of the Atrocities that occurred there.

Each project gave a detailed account of what happened during World War 2. We learned what was used during World War2 for example, guns, Tanks and Aircrafts but we also heard the sad and horrible stories of what happened during World War2.

It was an education in what happened only 65 years ago and I think every child should be aware of what occurred so that it will never be allowed to happen again.

NEWGRANGE VISIT

~ By Aaron

Ms. Keane O'Hagan's 5th and 6th class went to Newgrange on the 3rd of November, 2009. We went to the museum firstly. We watched a movie about the historical tomb. Built in 6000BC the tomb was used for buring the dead in the chamber which is shaped like a cross. The bodies would be burnt and put in the bowls that are in each chamber. Mostly High Kings would be buried here. This happened because in 6000BC, people believed in different Gods and this was for the Sun God. Afterwards we went to Newgrange itself, where we went inside and looked around but didn't touch anything. The guide turned off the lights and let one stay on to show the way it would look on the morning of the Winter Solstice. We were told about what the standing stones outside meant. The whole class enjoyed their visit and would like to go again.

Paired Reading with a Difference!

Instead of reading Horrid Henry this week with 2nd Class we worked on the school laptops. We read through the Halloween poems and stories of 2nd Class and proofread them so we could publish them on the website later. We used Microsoft Word to type and show 2nd Class how to insert clipart and word art. You can also check the ICT Page for more information.

Second Class showed us how to use the Interactive Whiteboard.

Hallowe’en Poetry Competition

~By Ciara

This year Fifth and Sixth Class entered a Hallowe’en Poetry Competition. The aim of the competition was to highlight the dangers of stockpiling waste in addition to the detrimental environmental impact of backyard burning. The poem had to be four  verses and  120 words long. Poems were aired on LMFM radio during the Hallowe’en period in an effort to discourage backyard burning as they produce dioxins and other pollutants which are detrimental to the atmosphere and to the air that we breathe.

Recently St. Peters ,Ms Keane O’ Hagan’s 5th and 6th class took part in the Irish Cancer Society Poster Competition. The main theme for the competition was positive images of a healthy lifestyle. It was broken into five key areas.

1. Eat a healthy diet.

2. Be physically active.

3. Be a healthy weight

4. If you smoke, plan to quit.

5. If you drink limit your intake

All the students from both classes designed their own posters and the top few were submitted to represent St. Peters. This was part of a fun day which was held in Xerox in October, to raise awareness about cancer, for everybody in the community. The winners that went through from our class were Caoibheadh and Declan.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH CON HANNEFFY

In Physical Education we were set a challenge by Con Hanneffy: We had to research and learn the meanings of the skills of agility, balance and co- ordination. Con established our teams and team leaders. The leaders of the teams were-

Flower Power – Sian

Super 8 – Nikayla

Team Actimel- Hannah

Oreo Dodgers – Roisin

(a)                 We had to research the meanings of the skills - agility, balance and co-ordination.

(b)                 We had to be able to explain what the skills meant.

(c)                 In teams of 8 with a leader, we had to develop a sequence to display each particular skill

(d)                 We had to work together as a team.

We practiced for about 10 days and then performed them on Friday the 25th of September.

The winning team for balance was Oreo Dodgers.

For agility it was Flower Power and for co-ordination was both Flower Power and Super 8. The winning team for team work was Team Actimel. We learnt a huge amount from this challenge, especially about the importance of working as a team. Thanks Con!
